It’s been an exciting month at Circa, with three interesting ladies featured in the media wearing garments from Circa. They’ve each found different ways to put together a look that expresses their personality.

I’m always on the search for wonderful vintage buttons - vintage garments have often lost them or might have had them replaced by “wrong” versions over the years so where ever possible, I like to restore them with the sort of button they would have had originally. They can make a such a difference to something plain as well.

Circa has thousands - all sorted into every conceivable colour, material and type (shanked, two hole, four hole or other) and grouped in little zip lock bags. It doesn’t seem to matter how many we have though, we don’t always have the “right” one so we need button specialists as a back up.

Thankfully, there is a small and dedicated group of ladies around who cater to just this need, whilst indulging in their own fascinating hobby. We get asked a lot about who we recommend, so here are the main ones we use:

Habadash, 8 Templeton Street Castlemaine - well worth a trip to the country and this treasure trove of buttons, sewing ephemera, vintage jewellery and linens and other goodies. I can’t go into Sonia Collard’s beautiful shop without wanting to buy something so it’s lucky that she has no shortage of fabulous trinkets at reasonable prices.

Here is some of her amazing bakelite button collection - they look like lollies, don’t you think?

In Melbourne’s Nicholas Building (corner of Swanston and Flinders Lane) you’ll find Buttonmania - Kate Boulton has the largest range of new as well as vintage buttons and conducts workshops and regular sales (a good time to stock up). I love her set of small drawers, where many of the goodies are kept:

I also go to see Miranda at Chapel street Bazaar (217 Chapel Street, Prahran) - she has one of the best collections of vintage haberdashery all at market prices - as well as regular half price sales. My favourites; gorgeous french jet buttons from the 1940s.

Speaking of markets, there’s a wonderful lady at Camberwell market on Sunday mornings - especially good for large plastic buttons from the 1950s, and buttons in quantities. I think all of hers are brand new, unused old stock, like Miranda’s.

Of course eBay is a wonderful resource too - although I must admit to preferring to be able to touch them, see how they look up against my fabric and inspect them for small damages - as well as use them immediately!

You can find vintage buttons every where that old things are - my last two favourite sources are op shops, where lucky customers might pick up an old tin or jar containing an old lady’s collection going back many years, and vintage fashion fairs like The Way We Wear Fair and Sydney’s Love Vintage Fair.

Vintage buttons come in all manner of materials, many of which the modern appreciator might not be familiar with - a handy guide to testing buttons to determine their material can be found here.

Another wonderful exhibition for your diary - it’s a way off yet but promises to be absolutely amazing for those of us who treasure vintage couture at it’s glamourous best.

Bendigo Exhibition - Golden Age of Couture

What: The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947-1957. That’s Dior, sweetie!
Where: Bendigo Art Gallery
When: 7th December 2008 to 22nd March 2008

Details wantonly pinched from the BAG’s website:
Bendigo Art Gallery is proud to announce an outstanding exhibition for Summer 2008-09. The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947-1957, organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum London, will be presented in Australia exclusively at Bendigo Art Gallery.

The Golden Age of Couture explores one of the most glamorous and remarkable decades in fashion history. Starting with the impact of Christian Dior’s New Look after the Second World War, it looks at the work of Dior and his contemporaries during the period when haute couture was at its height.

95% of the garments displayed are from the Victoria and Albert’s own collection (one of the best in the world) - it’s a part of the incredible (and sadly, for me, missed) exhibition which recently closed at the V&A in London - also called The Golden Age of Couture. For those who love books, a fabulous edition is available.

This is exciting and major - here’s a pic from the V&A show - Chiffon evening gown by Jean Desses.

It’s happening again - the Sydney Vintage Clothing, Jewellery and Textile Fair!

Sydney Vintage Fair 2

When: Friday April 11th to Sunday April 13th
Where: Canterbury Park Event Centre
Canterbury Racecourse
King Street, Canterbury.

As always, an action packed programme is planned - this is one of the most exciting events on the vintage calendar and I can’t wait. I had to miss the last one so will be there for this one.

You can see more pics from the last fair (November 2007) below the cut, including our the fabulous Lynn Savery, who won a prize in the Best Dressed award with her 1940s suit and “doughnut” hat. (more…)

Now on in Melbourne -

Increasingly, students ask me to help with assignments that they have on vintage or the history of dress or the industry - to make things easier, I thought I’d answer Jenny’s questions here. If my responses are of use to you, you’re most welcome to use them with accreditation. Thank you.

I kind of consider the 1950s (when it comes to fashion, at least) as starting with Dior’s New Look in 1947 and continuing until the early 1960s when styles became more simple, hemlines rose and the Mod era was born.

Here are some of my favourite garments from this time, and some choice pieces from the private collection of Dr Lynn Savery.

Some snapshots from our session on WW2 fashions: 1939 to 1946 (the extra year is because fashions took a while to change after the war). I love this era! These garments are from my own private collection, and that of Dr Lynn Savery - and be warned, there are lots.

What an amazing sale! Thanks to everyone who came on Monday and helped me clear out Circa’s cupboards. At the end of the three hours, over two hundred garments had gone off to new homes - we bagged up what was left and donated it to the Brotherhood of St Lawrence, who run the Hunter Gatherer shops so hopefully the best left over vintage items will end up there.

I hope you joined us and picked up a bargain! One happy customer is Gala Darling who snaffled eight fabulous items for only $16 - check out her blog for pics of her modelling her new outfits.

Spent most of today setting up the stockroom sale for tomorrow - and I’m excited!

For those who are coming, there are seven very full racks with quality vintage at below cost prices:
- Dresses from the 1920s onwards at a flat $20 per dress! Look out for ’30s rayon florals and ’40s beaded crepes.
- Long dresses (maxis, ball gowns and evening gowns) for a bargain $30 each!
- Overcoats and jackets for $20.
- Tops, skirts, trousers and lingerie for $10 each.
- Large quantity of menswear, ladieswear and other items for $2 a piece.

Where: upstairs, Circa 102 Gertrude Street Fitzroy.
How to get there: enter off Young street, there’s a car park behind Circa and there you will see the door going upstairs.
When: Australia Day holiday, Monday January 28th, from 12pm to 3pm only.
Everything sold as is with no returns or exchange.

Payment accepted: preferably cash, EFTPOS available for amounts over $20, Credit cards for amounts over $50.

Hope to see you there!
