Apologies for the quietness around here: I’ve been writing my thesis and finishing my Master’s degree. Almost there.

In the meantime, there’s another fashion talk coming up so please join me next week, online and free for the wonderful Glen Eira library. This is an all new talk, the first time I’ve been able to talk about one of my favourite aspects of vintage fashion.

From hand-made and stylishly practical Victorian lace up boots, shyly hiding beneath frou-frou skirts to the skimpiest of modern 15cm stiletto sandals, shoes have invoked a lot of creativity and variety during the last century. Led by technological and social change, our foremother’s choice of footwear adapted to their changing roles, revealing where they stood in society and how they spent their nights. Our public and most private selves.

Walk several miles in the shoes of our foremothers, as you strap on rubber ghillies for a frolic on the beach, or dance the night away in hand-beaded  1920s Mary Janes. A smart ladies lunch in two-toned ‘30s Spectators, or an exotic holiday in ‘40s espadrilles? Sashay in ‘50s stilettoes and groove in ‘60s plastic fantastics? So many wonderful choices. Those chunky stacked heel ‘70s knee high boots will look great with your hotpants and there’s still the last few decades to go, including a welcome return to ghillies, now clad on the elegant feet of Naomi Campbell as she takes a tumble in Alexander McQueen’s.
