Exhibition – ManStyle at the National Gallery of Victoria

With all this posting of exhibitions, you may be worried that I’ve forgotten the biggest one on at the moment – rest assured, I could never forget ManStyle.

Menswear is very much overshadowed by ladies’ fashions – thankfully the NGV is stepping in to redress the balance a little with their first ever exhibition dedicated to what the chaps like to wear. It’s so big, it fills the fashion galleries at both the NGV International and the NGV Ian Potter and is on for some time, so there’s no excuse for not making it.

From the website:
ManStyle presents a broad survey of menswear from around 1740 to the present. Beginning in the eighteenth century with exquisite brocade and embroidered silk coats, the exhibition then explores the evolution of the modern suit via the elegantly honed lines of the nineteenth century dandy, examining the rise of tailoring with its focus on perfect cut and fit.

What: ManStyle
When: March 11-November 27, 10am to 5pm (note that the NGV Int. is closed Tues and NGV Ian Potter is closed Mon).
Where: NGV International (St Kilda Rd) and NGV Ian Potter (Federation Square)
Cost: free

More information at the website.

So far, I’ve seen the NGV International’s galleries – the exhibition is divided into the themes of Peacocks and Dandies and I think the NGV Int. has the former – certainly they’re displaying a very inspiring selection of bold and beautiful designs including the much desired Seditionaries punk and bondage wear from Dame Westwood.

I look forward to seeing the Ian Potter, and hopefully some nice sharp tailoring.
