A wonderful new community exhibition opens next week, hosted by the Surrey Hills Heritage Society. From their website:

Over the past few months, members of the Canterbury History Group and the Surrey Hills Historical Society have been researching the social history of weddings, the traditions behind them and the changes that can be seen over time. Why the white dress? And why were orange blossoms so commonly used in bouquets, buttonholes and bridal coronets?

This exhibition draws upon material held in our collections and within the local community. It includes dresses from the late 1890s up until today, over 50 wedding photos, memorabilia including accessories, cards and wedding invitations, over 1000 local marriage announcements and newspaper reports and individual’s stories.

We invite you to come and share this snapshot and celebration of wedding traditions and to share your own stories.

On Thursday October 1st there’s a full day of events planned. I’ll be speaking at 11am about the history of bridalwear, Robert Baker from the Kew Historical Society will be speaking about the care and conservation of historical gowns and other speakers with talk about sewing.
