[Talk] Ladies fashion of the 1950s

Hi everyone,

I hope you’re enjoying our look through fashion of the 20th century, with Glen Eira library? I’m loving these detailed looks at the different times and the next one is that most fun of decades, the 1950s. From the GEL website:

After WW2, women were thrilled to ditch the austere fashions of ‘make do and mend’ and rationing. When Christian Dior introduced his 19th century inspired silhouettes in 1947, serious grown-up glamour was back in style. Dior’s pastel ‘flower’ women, with nipped in waists and hourglass figures (supported by corsetry), set the tone for the next decade and more.

The 1950s saw a return to femininity. Skirts were big and swished with layers of crinoline petticoats. Busts and hips were padded to emphasise tiny waists. The decade started with long skirts, that became progressively shorter as the decade went on, and the post-war ‘baby boomers’ started to create their own ideas of fashion. In between some of the 20th century’s greatest couturiers fought for dominance: Balenciaga created sculptural couture and Chanel returned with her famous ‘cardigan suit’. And let’s not forget the iconic sports and leisurewear we still love today.
