Oh, I’ve been waiting for this so long – in fact, I can’t believe I haven’t already seen it! The TV series Mad Men has been reverberating around the vintage world for more than a year, and finally the first season will be screened by SBS (it’s been on Foxtel for some time, but not all of us get that).
Set in the early ’60s, it’s based around a Madison Avenue, New York ad agency (hence the title). Ostensibly it deals with changing social mores but we all know it’s really about the style….interiors and fashion mostly but I expect the whole thing to look quite scrumptious.
Perhaps not coincidentally, there is a lot of demand for early ’60s style at the moment – in particular the smooth Italian-influenced suits the chaps wear with skinny ties. I’m going to enjoy watching a show set in an era when the men put almost as much thought into their appearance as the ladies.
It’s nice to see that I’m not the only one excited about this event – Super Kawaii Mama is currently blogging a series of Mad Men style workshops (I love her tips on how to get a good bouffant and can’t wait to try them out now that my hair is getting longer) and even a Mad Men competition. Apparently she’s had some great entries so far from well-dressed men – can’t wait to see some photos.
SBS will be screening Mad Men on Thursday at 8.30pm – first episode “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” is already up on their website for viewing but I’ll be waiting to see it on the (bigger) screen with my loved one and a martini.
Oh yes, I am truely a Don Draper fan. Andreas and I have watched Season 1 and 2, so let us know if you miss an episode. I absolutely loved the darkness of it and the social statements it made.
I borrowed Season One from a friend and whipped through it – such a good show, they really paid attention to detail. Can’t wait to see the next season. Highly recommended!
