Hi everyone,
My next free library talk is on soon at Nunawading library – as the weather warms up, we enter Spring Racing Carnival time and getting frocked (and hatted!) up for the Melbourne Cup. Bookings essential.
From the website:
Long before ‘Fashions on the Field’ began in 1962, Melburnians were dressing elegantly, colourfully—and sometimes outrageously—for the annual racing season. Racewear has evolved alongside racing itself, shaped by shifting fashion trends, weather, and global influences. Join fashion historian and author Nicole Jenkins for an illustrated talk exploring how London models, style revolutions, and practical considerations have all left their mark on Melbourne’s trackside fashion.
- What: A History of Melbourne Racewear with Fashion Historian Nicole Jenkins
- Where: Nunawading Library, 379 Whitehorse Rd , Nunawading 3131
- When: Wednesday Sept 17th, 10:30-11.30am
- Cost: free!
- Bookings and more information: Click here.
Hope to see you there!

Really interesting talk in a lovely setting.
I was fascinated by Jean Shrimpton when I was young so it so good that you talked about her and Dupont.
Hope you enjoy the Norma Tullo dress – it’s gone to a good place
Thanks Chris: I love the Shrimpton story, it’s so evocative of where we were at, at that time, and how far we’ve come. My mum always spoke about how conservative and dull fashions were at the time and the story evidences that. I’m glad Jean dragged us into the ’60s, someone had to do it. I do wonder, though, what become of the dress itself: it seems to have been lost to time.
Thank you so much for your wonderful Tullo too: it’s currently undergoing some conservation before I document it and add to my blog post about the label. She was such an important designer.
