Frocks, Fashion and Flinders Lane

Hi all,

A great new TV series is in the pipeline, focusing on the Melbourne fashion industry of the ’50s, and to be created by producers Julie Eckersley and Bethany Jones.

If you’ve read Lesley Sharon Rosenthal’s wonderful book ‘Schmattes’ you’ll know exactly how thrilling and glamorous this time was, and how formative of the Australian fashion world and migrant experience.

As part of the creative process, they’re inviting interested people and those who lived and breathed the time and place to partake in an online panel discussion. Tickets are free.

Joining author and filmmaker Lesley Sharon Rosenthal on the panel will be iconic designer and artist Prue Acton and Katherine Pakula (whose parents founded swimwear company ‘Ada of California’) and also fashion anthropologist and photographer Tom McEvoy. There will also be a fashion show of original garments made in the Lane.

What a great project! I can’t wait to hear more.

  1. Oh I wish I’d seen this post earlier this year! Would have loved to have attended this event. My grandfather worked in the garment industry on Flinders Lane for over 50 years.
