Workshop: Behind the Seams – vintage fabrics and their care

One last workshop for the year!

UPDATE; This event is now booked out – if you’d like me to let you know of the next one, please let me know.

This one is an essential for those who love vintage and want to get the most from their collections. Here are some of the topics I’ll cover:

– How to tell what fabric it is, whether it’s natural, man made or synthetic
– Different weaves: satin, velvet, twill, worsted etc
– How to clean them and how to get stains out – and what to do when you can’t.
– How to store vintage clothing and textiles.
– What to look for when you’re buying vintage.
– How to do basic repairs and restorations.

It will be also useful for students of textiles and fashion – understanding fabrics and what you can get them to do. I’ll be using many vintage fabrics to demonstrate.

What: Workshop on vintage fabrics and their care.
When: Saturday 19th November, 10-11am
Where: Circa Vintage Clothing, 102 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy
Cost:$20 per person. Limited places as a small group only.
Bookings required รขโ‚ฌโ€œ book online here or at Circa.

  1. This sounds so interesting, but unfortunately I am in Brisbane so I won’t be able to attend. Do you come to Brisbane to do these workshops at any stage? Or do you have a presentation of this that you can download off the Internet? I would really love to learn this sort of information. Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚
(and by the way, I LOVE your book- it’s fantastic, and the pictures are just divine)

  2. Thanks Alli – funnily enough, I was chatting in the shop yesterday with a Brisbane lady who asked the same thing: I can go anywhere there is demand, but I’ve been thinking if it could tie in with a vintage fair or relevant event it would be good. I’ll give it some thought and see what we can do as there are many in Queensland who ask me to come ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Oh wow, this sounds like an amazing workshop! I’ll be the first to sign up if you bring it to the US! Is most of what you’re covering about caring for/cleaning fabrics (esp. 1920s-1940s) covered in your book?
