Make Do and Mend: vintage sewing workshop

Hi all,

I get a lot of requests for vintage clothing mending, to either fix other people’s or teach it, so I’m collaborating with the Gaye Abandon School of Sewing and Upcycling for a special one off workshop. Bring your projects along and for three hours, we can tackle the vintage skills you need to fix or alter your vintage wardrobe.

I follow a practice of “first, do no harm” so repairs and alterations should always be reversible and techniques are historically accurate so that you’re not diminishing the integrity or value of your vintage clothing investment. So none of this glue-on patches or hem tape for me, just good old fashioned sewing skills like our grandmas used.

It’s a nice small class, so everyone will get the attention they need.

Some of the techniques we’ll look at will be:
– darning
– patching
– taking seams in/out
– letting hems up/down
– fixing lace, beading and embellishments
– attaching buttons, zippers and other openers

Pins, needles, threads, scissors and a range of preloved fabrics are available for you to use so you just need to bring your project.
