I am an Australian architect running my own firm in Charlottesville, Virginia, just south of Washington DC.
I left Australia in the 70’s to accept a scholarship in the US and took a number of Merivale & Mr John suits with me. Regrettably they are long gone.
I am trying to buy a number of new mens suits that replicate the design of Merivale and Mr. John’s suits from the Mid-70’s. Is there anyone in Melbourne
capable of providing a high quality recreation of those suits, especially the jackets. Does the Merival & Mr.John brand still exist? Is it possible to access/purchase their design documents/patterns and have a tailor here try to recreate those beautiful lines?
You help would be appreciated

Hi John, thank you for your enquiry, I’ll email you about this.
Hi Nicole,
Would you be able to enlighten me to the best way to age a Mr John jacket by Merivale that i acquired recently ?. The jacket is navy blue with red stitching . It has 2 buttons with a red stiched button hole on the lapel. On the back centre and down the back of the sleeves are stitched arrows. The inner sleeves are (were) white with black stripes. It has 3 labels inside the inner pocket, a dry clean only, a terrylene and wool and one more label with style, col, size, ord no, cut, match , finish & pres.
I’ve tried serching but to no avail. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks
Kelly
Hi Kelly, you’re welcome to send me photos but from your description, I’d say the jacket is likely to be ’70s – probably early or mid. From the labels, it sounds like it might be a sample.
Hi Nicole,
Thank you for the fast responce.
I’ve taken pictures although struggling to upload to this box from photo file. If i still cant is there any other way of sending them ?
Regards
Kelly
Hi Kelly, I generally upload photos online to a site and then send the URL. It’s better than sending large files. There are free sites you can use like Photobucket.
The Real Thing
Two House of Merivale and Mr John men’s suits in mint condition.
House labels still on garments.
Suit slim build and height about 175 – 180cm
One black suit purchased in 1971 size 82cm (32inch) waist and 96cm (38 inch) jacket
One white suit with blue pinstripe purchased in 1975 size 86cm (34inch) waist and 96cm (38inch) jacket
Both are in very good near perfect condition.
Hello The wife and I were going through some of our things stored and we thought you may be interested.
I purchased a Mr John suit from John and Merivale just to wear at our wedding recption.
The suit was then put in to storage I only wore the suit once on 20th November 1976 and is still in very good condition.
I can provide photo`s on your request.
Thanks Denis, I’m sure it’s a really great suit. I’m not currently acquiring but thank you for thinking of me.
Hi. Does anyone have to purchase a pale yellow Merivale dress probably 1979 1980 similar to the white Marilyn dress but it went over the shoulders was made of a very light weight crepe, full skirt but no pleats, had wide 2” matching belt with eyelet holes to tighten? Or if someone has one I would pay for them to have a pattern made?
