Vintage Childrens wear

Hi all,

Yesterday I bought some really love hand made children’s wear from the 1950s to the late 1960s. You know the sort of thing: bright hard wearing cotton floral dresses, hand knitted jumpers, lovely items made for two daughters and kept well over the decades.

They join the rest of my children’s wear collection – something between 3,000 and 4,000 pieces, mostly from the ’40s to the ’70s, many of it brand new with tags (although dusty from the years of storage, don’t worry I clean everything).

Circa is only a small shop and it’s easy to fill with ladies and menswear – so far my children’s wear has only been available to film makers like Romulus, My Father, but I was wondering – if we made a little section for these items, would that be of interest to you?

Thank you for your comments.

  1. Well I can’t see it being relevant, at least for a few years if ever, so my opinion doesn’t count for much. For what it’s worth though, if I had children I’d likely try to encourage them to wear alternative and stylish clothing so I’d probably try to find some vintage apparel for them. I think also vintage baby-wear looks gorgeous, but I’m not sure how safe/practical it is, so again probably yes.

  2. I’d totally be interested in it if I had the need. Hopefully by the time I do have a need you’ll have a plentiful stock 😉

  3. I’m in love with children’s vintage and would dress my two kids in vintage everyday given the chance…I say go for it! x

  4. I have quite a collection of vintage baby clothes! Would love to see that kind of thing in Circa, but I’m not sure I’d want to put a real child in them for anything other than a very special occasion!

There might be people (like me) out there who like buying the vintage, to copy and make out of modern fabrics.

Can’t wait to see what you have!

  5. Are you kidding? I’d put together a registry list and tell *everyone* who wanted to buy me anything for the bub to go shop with you instead. You couldn’t possibly charge more than the yuppie kids’ stores.

Mind you, I imagine they’re all pretty “girlie”? I guess if I’m realistic, I’d have to see them first… (and for that matter, I’d have to see Harper first… who may be a ‘he’ for all we know).

  6. Definitely interested, and in fact forgot to ask you about it the last time I was in town so figued I would catch up with you about it the next time I’m in town. I’m not a huge fan of the bright colours, or lack of colour choice (pink for girls, blue for boys, green or yellow only if trying to be neutral!), when there is potential for so much more. And I like natural fibres so yes. I wouldn’t spend a lot on something that is going to be everyday wear is the only thing though, but I guess I’d have to see what you’ve got first to know what fits the category.

  7. I’m trying for kids now, and as a vintage-loving girl, have wondered how I was going to find vintage clothes for my kis in future! I’m very interested in your offering!

  8. To be honest, I’d have to say I’d be interested for special occasion wear. I love vintage children’s wear and make a lot according to the old patterns when I know I can reproduce them again. I’d just hate to see them ruined in the day to day shenanigans of a four year old. But then again what better way to teach her about the importance of fashion history and respect for her clothes.

  9. I would LOVE it if you stocked childrenswear! I have a 2 year old daughter and am finding it increasingly frustrating to find clothes that are stylish and unique – what is around is not only expensive but most of it is truly ugly.
Finding vintage for kids is really hard, especially in good condition – go for it and the word will spread pretty quickly!
